The Shire horse (pictured left) is Britain's largest draught horse, standing over 17.2hh and weighing almost a ton. In Medieval Britain Shire horses carried knights into battle. Before steam engines were invented, the Shire was an agricultural workhorse. Since agricultural mechan -isation, the Shire has survived due only to the support of a small number of breeders, breweries and societies like The Shire Horse Society and Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
